Keeping Healthy on the Road

I recently went on a road trip up to New Castle with 3 of my girlfriends for a high school friends engagement party. Hilarious is an understatement. All four of us packed into a car for over 12 hours was either going to be crazy fun or end up a murder scene. Thankfully no one ended up dead, we did however fight over music genres, who got front seat and drove 2 hours in the wrong direction – oops.

Keeping your healthy eating habits while you’re cruising the roads can be tough. Summer vibes, good tunes and making memories should be all you need to worry about! Unfortunately, it can be rather easy to quickly and mindlessly over eat on all the wrong kinds of foods while you’re trekking. Pair this with the long hours of sitting and you’ve got the perfect combo for an unhappy and sluggish body.

With that in mind, I’ve put together a few tips, tricks and ideas for you to keep healthy on the road! There’s no need to jeopardise your long term goals for a short term splurge. Here goes!

Plan Ahead

You’ve heard it before but I’ll say it again! Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. If you aren’t prepared before you set off on your road trip you’re already behind the 8 ball. My suggestion? The night before, pack yourself plenty of snacks and meals that are car friendly to stop yourself from unnecessarily buying things from the fast food/petrol stations along the way. Some of my top road trip snacks would be:

Stay Hydrated

As silly as it may sound, it’s so easy to become dehydrated on a road trip. The culprit? Lots of snacking, usually on foods higher in salt and sugar; lots of coffee too keep us ‘energised’ for the long road ahead. Try to skip on the caffeine, juices and soft drinks and opt for water instead! As much as everyone will hate you for all the pee breaks, your body will thank you I promise!

Keep Moving

As tough as it may be, try to keep moving. I made an effort to stretch, do some star jumps and even a couple of burpees each stop we made. Not only will it wake you up and make you feel more energised, but every rep counts for something.

Make the best out of the worst

I know it can be hard sometimes to make perfectly healthy choices. Sometimes you’re stranded in the middle of no where and the only thing in sight is a dodgy looking petrol station. I get it. So what I suggest is you make the best food choices you can at the time. Opt for air popped lightly salted popcorn instead of regular chips. A protein bar instead of a chocolate bar. Water instead of fruit juice or soft drink. Keep in mind that you’re going to be using minimal energy while sitting in the car! Choose healthy options while eating out too! Go for something that has a nice balance of fats, protein and carbs.

Active Activities

Planning activities along the way can be such a fun way to keep active. Whether it’s a hike, bike ride, rope climb or in my case… sand boarding, yup you heard right, sand boarding. You’ll be getting your heart pumping, and legs moving without even realising.
