As a general guide, the recommended daily allowance of protein for women is approximately 46 grams per day for adults. There are some factors that can impact this including age, activity level and muscle building goals.

Protein intake by age

  • Adolescents: 34-46 grams
  • Adult women: 46 grams
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women: Additional 25 grams of protein per day during pregnancy and lactation

Protein intake for optimal muscle building

To support muscle growth it’s recommended for women to consume 1.2 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight as a general guidelines. This higher range is often recommended for those engaged in resistance training or intense physical activity.

Active women, especially those who engage in regular exercise, may require more protein to support muscle repair and growth. Athletes often need higher protein intakes to support their training and recovery. The exact amount of additional protein needed depends on the intensity and duration of physical activity.
